Last night (Saturday) I did three improv shows. It started with two back-to-back sold out editions of Fandom: Harry Potter, followed by Mandinka’s fourth show at The Institution.
Going in I wasn’t daunted. It’s not like I’m a coal miner. I’m making silly jokes for a few hours. But by the end of the night I was exhausted. Mia and I grabbed some Magnolia Cafe after our Mandinka show, and I barely had the energy to do the usual improv chit chat.
I attribute much of the fatigue to the metric ton of fast food I shoved into my gullet the last two weeks. And my sleep schedule has been off. So yeah, I wasn’t going in with the healthiest foundation.
But I also think Fandom is an unusually taxing production. For starters, I had to study my ass off to prepare for Fandom: Harry Potter, as I’ve read only two books and seen only two movies. Then we did about 180 minutes of improv over two shows. It’s a very active, interactive performance. And then we booked it down south to prep for the Mandinka show.
I’m glad Fandom is coming to an end. It’s been a great learning experience, and I’m so thankful to have been part of a popular, unique show. I’ll miss the people, but I’m eager to move on to a new improv experience. Speaking of which, I’ve got to go prepare for my audition later this afternoon.
